What’s the weather like on Gran Canaria in September? Is this a good time to visit?

September is an excellent time to visit Gran Canaria. The weather is warm and pleasant, with temperatures averaging 27°C (81°F). The sun and the drought are still with us, and the sea water has been heating up all summer. The weather remains sunny and dry, ideal for beach activities and outdoor exploration. We like the slightly more relaxed atmosphere, as the island is less crowded after the summer peak.

The weather in Gran Canaria in September is generally stable and pleasant, with some variations between coastal and mountain areas.
The trade winds, which blow regularly from the northeast, help to moderate temperatures and maintain comfortable conditions. Sunny days are the norm in September, with clear skies for most of the month. The risk of precipitation is very low.

Near the sea, conditions are generally warm and sunny, with light sea breezes cooling the atmosphere. Coastal areas enjoy long hours of sunshine and low rainfall, creating ideal conditions for beach activities and water sports.

Rain and Wind

Expected rainfall in Gran Canaria in September is minimal. If it rains, the precipitation is generally light and short-lived. Precipitation is more likely towards the end of the month, as we transition into October, but rarely has an impact on vacation plans.

Crowds and other conditions

The month of September in Gran Canaria sees a significant drop in visitor numbers compared to the summer months. With most European schools back in session, the island is less crowded and offers a more relaxed atmosphere for visitors.
We love September, as it offers a balance of good weather, fewer crowds and comfortable swimming.

Dolphins and whales in September

Dolphins and whales can be seen around Gran Canaria in September, as the region is home to a wide variety of cetaceans all year round. We highly recommend it.
The most commonly observed dolphins are bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and common dolphins. They can be seen all year round.
Conditions are often just right for a boat trip.

There are tours in catamarans, speedboats and more traditional boats. Departures are mainly from the port of Puerto Rico in the south of the island.

  • Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino: September 8, in the town of Terror. This religious and cultural festival honors Gran Canaria’s patron saint. Festivities include processions, traditional music and dance performances, and markets.
