April is an excellent time to visit Gran Canaria. The weather is generally pleasant, with warm (but not too warm) temperatures and plenty of sunshine. This is the ideal time to enjoy outdoor activities and the beach, as there are fewer tourists after the peak winter season and before summer.

On the whole, April offers a generally pleasant and stable climate. The contrast between coastal and mountain climates offers visitors the chance to discover different microclimates in a short distance.

Seaside weather

Near the coast, you can expect warm, sunny days, with occasional light breezes. The sea air maintains pleasant temperatures, perfect for beach activities and al fresco dining.
Although it’s not hot by summer standards, many visitors find it warm enough to sunbathe.

Weather in the mountains

In the mountains, the weather can be slightly cooler and more variable. There may be a few clouds in the morning, but they often clear up as the day progresses. At higher altitudes, there may be more wind and occasional fog. On the whole, the weather is generally dry and sunny, with short, infrequent showers. The stable weather is ideal for hiking and exploring the island’s diverse landscapes.

Rain and Wind

In April, rainfall is very low, especially compared to many European destinations. When it does rain, it’s usually short-lived and doesn’t disrupt activities for long.

  • Rainfall in Maspalomas: 3-10 mm
    (1 to 2 days on average)

Wind conditions in Gran Canaria in April are generally mild to moderate. The trade winds, known locally as “alisios”, bring a pleasant breeze to coastal areas, helping to maintain comfortable temperatures. Wind speeds are generally between 10 and 20 km/h (6 and 12 mph). North and northeast coasts can experience slightly stronger winds, while southern regions are often more sheltered.

Sunshine

In April, daylight hours vary from 12:30 to 13:15.
Sunrise is around 7:30 am and sunset around 8:30 pm.

In April, Gran Canaria hosts several noteworthy events:

  • Semana Santa (Holy Week): Usually takes place in early to mid-April (but sometimes in March). You’ll see religious processions and cultural events all over the island.
  • Feria del Queso (Cheese Fair): Usually held in the second half of April (and sometimes May) in Santa María de Guía, it showcases local cheeses and culinary traditions.
  • Rallye Islas Canarias Trofeo El Corte Inglés: a major car rally that may affect your access to certain roads
  • Fiesta de los Aborígenes – April 29: This festival marks the last uprising of the Guanches against the Spanish and the annexation of Gran Canaria by the Crown of Castile in 1483. Big ceremonies take place in Fortaleza Grande, near Santa Lucia.
