Is the weather nice in Gran Canaria in March? Is this a good time to visit?

March is an excellent time to visit Gran Canaria. The weather is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine. It’s late winter, but the climate is already warming up, with afternoon temperatures around 22°C (72°F), ideal for outdoor activities and visits to the beach. The island is less crowded than during the summer months, offering a more relaxed atmosphere.

Gran Canaria climate in March – weather forecast

Overall, March offers a mild, spring-like climate that many find ideal for exploring the island’s diverse landscapes and engaging in outdoor activities without the intense heat of summer.

Seaside weather

Along the coast, conditions are generally mild and pleasant, with plenty of sunshine and occasional light breezes. The days are often warm and comfortable. So you’ll have ideal conditions for beach activities and al fresco dining.

Weather in the mountains

In the mountains, the weather can be more variable and cooler. Mornings can start with cloud cover, which often dissipates by mid-day.
At higher altitudes, there may be more wind and occasional light rain or mist.
The transition from winter to spring brings warmer and warmer temperatures as the month progresses, making it a pleasant time to explore both the coastal areas and the interior of the island.

Rain and Wind

In March, rainfall remains relatively low compared with many European destinations. When it does rain, it’s usually of short duration and low intensity. This does not disrupt operations for long.

  • Rainfall in Las Palmas: 10-23 mm
    (3 to 4 days on average)
  • Rainfall in Maspalomas: 7-18 mm
    (in less than 2 to 3 days on average)

In March, winds are generally moderate on Gran Canaria. The trade winds, known locally as “alisios”, bring a pleasant breeze to the island, particularly in coastal areas. Wind speeds are generally between 10 and 20 km/h (6-12 mph). The north and northeast coasts can experience slightly stronger winds, while the south coast is generally calmer.

In March, daylight hours vary from 11:35 to 12:25.
Sunrise is around 7am and sunset around 7.10pm.

Gran Canaria enjoys abundant sunshine in March. On average, the island receives around 7-8 hours of sunshine a day. The southern part of the island, around Maspalomas and Puerto Rico, tends to be sunnier than the northern regions. The skies are often clear, but some days there may be partial cloud cover, especially in the morning.

The average sea temperature in Gran Canaria in March varies between 19°C and 20°C (66°F and 68°F). Although this temperature may seem cool to some swimmers, many find it refreshing and suitable for swimming and water sports.

But the water temperature gradually rises as spring approaches, making it more pleasant than during the winter months.

If you’re a watersports enthusiast, consider a wetsuit for long periods in the water. All in all, it’s a good time to swim, especially in warm weather and in sheltered bays where the water can be slightly warmer.

Crowds and other conditions

March is considered an intermediate season, offering a good balance between pleasant weather and manageable crowds. The island is less crowded than during the summer months and the high winter season (December to February), although there may be some visitors during the vacations in certain parts of Europe.
Prices for accommodation and flights are often lower than in the high season, making it an economical time to visit the island. However, it’s advisable to book in advance to get the best deals, especially if your visit coincides with local events or festivals.

Dolphins and whales in March

Dolphins and whales can be seen around Gran Canaria in March, as the region is home to a wide variety of cetaceans all year round. We highly recommend it.
The most commonly observed dolphins are bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and common dolphins. They can be seen all year round.
Conditions are often just right for a boat trip.

There are tours in catamarans, speedboats and more traditional boats. Departures are mainly from the port of Puerto Rico in the south of the island.

In March, Gran Canaria hosts several noteworthy events:

  • International Festival of “Músicas de Canarias”: An event straddling February and March, this festival presents a variety of musical performances, with prestigious orchestras and soloists, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Canary Islands.
  • Carnival: often lasting until early March, with parades, music and colorful costumes all over the island.
  • Holy Week (Semana Santa): If Easter falls in March, processions and religious events take place all over the island, especially in the last week of March.
