May is considered an intermediate season in Gran Canaria. Crowds are generally moderate, with fewer tourists than in the hottest summer months. Prices for accommodation and activities are generally lower than in high season, representing good value for money for travelers.

Climate in Gran Canaria in May – weather forecast
Gran Canaria’s climate in May is generally pleasant and stable, ideal for exploring all the magnificent landscapes. You appreciate the minimal risk of prolonged bad weather or extreme temperatures.
Seaside weather
Near the coast, conditions are generally warm and sunny, with light sea breezes cooling the atmosphere. The climate is characterized by clear skies and low humidity, making it ideal for beach activities and coastal exploration. We love this period for enjoying the beaches and, above all, the natural pools.
Weather in the mountains
In the mountainous interior, the weather can be slightly cooler and more variable. Mornings are often clear, but clouds can form as the day progresses, especially at higher altitudes. This creates a dynamic landscape where you can encounter sunny conditions in one area and cooler, foggier weather in another a short distance away.
On the hottest days, the central lands can offer a refreshing break.

- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

In May, there is little rain. These are generally light showers of short duration, if at all.

Winds in Gran Canaria in May are generally mild to moderate. The trade winds, known locally as “alisios”, bring a pleasant breeze to the island, particularly along the coast. These winds help maintain pleasant temperatures and clear skies. Wind speeds are never high, so outdoor activities can be enjoyed without disturbance.

In May, daylight hours vary from 1.15pm to 1.45pm.
Sunrise is around 7.10am and sunset around 8.45pm.
In May, Gran Canaria enjoys plenty of sunshine. On average, the island enjoys 9 to 10 hours of sunshine a day. The sky is often clear, with occasional clouds, especially in mountainous areas. You’ll be able to enjoy all the island’s attractions!
Water temperature – swimming in Gran Canaria in May
The average sea temperature in Gran Canaria in May is around 20 to 21°C (68 to 70°F) in both north and south.
Although this temperature may seem a little cool for some swimmers, we find it very pleasant. It’s a good time to swim, especially on warmer days when the air temperature is higher.
Water sports enthusiasts and people will find the conditions pleasant.

Crowds and other conditions
May is considered an intermediate season, offering a good balance between pleasant weather and light crowds. The number of tourists is lower than in the summer months. This translates into a more relaxed atmosphere at popular attractions and on the beaches.
Dolphins and whales in May
Dolphins and whales can be seen around Gran Canaria in May, as the region is home to a wide variety of cetaceans all year round. We highly recommend it.
The most commonly observed dolphins are bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and common dolphins. They can be seen all year round.
Conditions are often just right for a boat trip.
There are tours in catamarans, speedboats and more traditional boats. Departures are mainly from the port of Puerto Rico in the south of the island.
