Is a visit to the Guayadeque Interpretation Centre worthwhile?
Yes, it’s worth a visit. We were transported back in time to Barranco de Guayadeque, this magnificent valley nestled in the center of Gran Canaria nearAgüimes. Rooms devoted to the ravine’s geology and biodiversity will make you aware of its particular features. We also enjoyed the collections of artefacts and the informative panels on the troglodytic life of the Guanches, the island’s ancient inhabitants. A fascinating tour that provides a better understanding of this exceptional natural site.
It’s one of the best museums on the island.
What you can see
Instructive models and stones

We saw models of the valley and different types of stone, understanding how erosion, water and time have shaped the landscape.
Information panels on flora and fauna

Barranco de Guayadeque is a nature reserve with a rich biodiversity. A wide variety of plants and animals make the site an exceptional place to preserve. We learned that the aguililla buteo buteo raptor, for example, thrives in the valley’s treetops.
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

An example of a cave used for water passage

We observed a real cave dug into the rock of the museum wall, showing how the galleries are used to obtain water.
Reproductions of troglodyte villages

You’ll be able to see small reproductions of the troglodyte dwellings that the ancient inhabitants dug into the mountain. We found them instructive and attractive, with their lighting effects. Extend your visit into the valley to see them for yourself!
Plant and animal resources of the Guanches

Another room explains the Guanches’ food and utility resources. We learned that they ate various legumes and animals such as goats.
Traditional objects

A series of traditional objects is on display. A touching example of the craftsmanship of the old inhabitants. It reminded us of what can also be seen at the ethnological museum of the Lighthouse of Maspalomas.
Tombs and mummies

Another part of the center is devoted to Guanche funeral rites. You’ll be amazed to see a tomb, skeletons and mummies that have touched our hearts.
Rooms showing the evolution of traditions over time

The exhibition then looks at the evolution of practices in the Middle Ages and during the Spanish conquest. We learned a lot, especially about Christian religious rituals.
The mechanism of a water mill

A curious mechanism intrigued us. It was the gear from an old water mill, an example of the technical contribution made by European settlers.
