Is the weather good in Tenerife in August? Is this a good time to visit?
We love Tenerife in August for its warm, dry climate, perfect for beach activities. Average temperatures range from 26°C to 29°C, with optimal sunshine of around 10 hours a day. Although it’s high season, with a huge influx of tourists, we particularly appreciate the summer heat tempered by the trade winds, which make the climate more bearable than on mainland Europe.

Travelling to Tenerife in August: summary of conditions
Temperatures
Temperatures are warm but pleasant in August. The thermometer averages 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F) during the day. Nights remain mild with temperatures between 20°C and 22°C (68°F-72°F).
Water temperatures
Ocean temperatures reach their annual maximum, fluctuating between 23°C and 24°C (73°F to 75°F). We find these conditions ideal for swimming and water sports. The water is particularly pleasant in sheltered coves and natural pools, where it may even be slightly warmer.
Crowds and prizes
August is Tenerife’s peak season. We are seeing the greatest crowds on beaches and in tourist areas. Prices for accommodation and activities are at their highest level ever. Advance booking is strongly recommended for all tourist services.
Opening conditions
Everything is open in Tenerife in August: attractions, hotels, restaurants and shops are in full swing. You can take advantage of the extended opening hours of many establishments during this summer period. Amusement parks and tourist sites often offer additional entertainment.
Length of day
Daylight hours average 13:15 between sunrise and sunset. The sun rises around 7:30am and sets around 8:45pm. This gives you long days in which to enjoy outdoor activities to the full.

Climate in Tenerife in August – weather forecast
In August, Tenerife’s climate is hot and sunny, with variations depending on altitude and exposure. We particularly appreciate this climatic diversity, which allows us to adapt our activities to the heat.
On the coast
Along the coast, the climate is hot and dry, particularly on the south coast. We enjoy maximum sunshine and high temperatures, pleasantly tempered by the trade winds. Rainfall is almost non-existent, providing ideal conditions for beach activities.
In the heights
At higher altitudes, particularly in the Teide region, temperatures are more moderate. We recommend early-morning hikes to take advantage of the cooler weather. The air is dry and the sun intense, requiring good sun protection. Evenings can be cool, with significant temperature differences between day and night.

- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

In August, rainfall is extremely rare on Tenerife. We’re enjoying dry, stable weather. The few clouds that do form are generally confined to mountainous areas.

The trade winds blow regularly in August, providing a welcome cooling breeze. We particularly appreciate their moderating effect on temperatures. The south of the island is generally sheltered from the wind by the natural protection of Mount Teide.

Tenerife enjoys exceptional sunshine in August, with an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day. We particularly enjoy these long, sunny days. The south of the island gets the most sunshine, especially Costa Adeje and Los Gigantes. In the Teide region, the light is particularly intense due to the altitude, requiring good sun protection.
Water temperature – swimming in Tenerife in August
August is the ideal month to enjoy the sea in Tenerife. The water temperature reaches its annual maximum, offering perfect conditions for swimming and water sports. We particularly like the southern beaches where the water is slightly warmer.

Whale and dolphin watching
August is a good time for cetacean watching. The calm, warm waters attract many species. We particularly recommend morning excursions from Los Gigantes or Costa Adeje, when the sea is at its calmest. Pilot whales and dolphins are present in large numbers, and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Bryde’s whales, which frequent Canarian waters in summer. – see the options

August prices
As everywhere, prices vary depending on what you are looking for. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels to 5-star hotels. This makes it difficult to give a precise budget. However, August is the peak of the tourist season. Prices are therefore at their highest, particularly in seaside areas such as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. We strongly advise you to book several months in advance to get the best rates.
