Going to Tenerife in August: quick answers

Is the weather good in Tenerife in August? Is this a good time to visit?

We love Tenerife in August for its warm, dry climate, perfect for beach activities. Average temperatures range from 26°C to 29°C, with optimal sunshine of around 10 hours a day. Although it’s high season, with a huge influx of tourists, we particularly appreciate the summer heat tempered by the trade winds, which make the climate more bearable than on mainland Europe.

Climate in Tenerife in August – weather forecast

In August, Tenerife’s climate is hot and sunny, with variations depending on altitude and exposure. We particularly appreciate this climatic diversity, which allows us to adapt our activities to the heat.

On the coast

Along the coast, the climate is hot and dry, particularly on the south coast. We enjoy maximum sunshine and high temperatures, pleasantly tempered by the trade winds. Rainfall is almost non-existent, providing ideal conditions for beach activities.

In the heights

At higher altitudes, particularly in the Teide region, temperatures are more moderate. We recommend early-morning hikes to take advantage of the cooler weather. The air is dry and the sun intense, requiring good sun protection. Evenings can be cool, with significant temperature differences between day and night.

OUR TIPS TO RENT A CAR IN Tenerife
  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
  • But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

Teide cable car

The trade winds blow regularly in August, providing a welcome cooling breeze. We particularly appreciate their moderating effect on temperatures. The south of the island is generally sheltered from the wind by the natural protection of Mount Teide.

Sunshine

In August, daylight hours are around 1:15 pm. The sun rises around 7:30am and sets around 8:45pm.

Tenerife enjoys exceptional sunshine in August, with an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day. We particularly enjoy these long, sunny days. The south of the island gets the most sunshine, especially Costa Adeje and Los Gigantes. In the Teide region, the light is particularly intense due to the altitude, requiring good sun protection.

August is the ideal month to enjoy the sea in Tenerife. The water temperature reaches its annual maximum, offering perfect conditions for swimming and water sports. We particularly like the southern beaches where the water is slightly warmer.

  • Water temperature in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 23°C (73°F)
  • Water temperature in Puerto de la Cruz: 23°C (73°F)
  • Water temperature at Los Gigantes: 24°C (75°F)

Whale and dolphin watching

August is a good time for cetacean watching. The calm, warm waters attract many species. We particularly recommend morning excursions from Los Gigantes or Costa Adeje, when the sea is at its calmest. Pilot whales and dolphins are present in large numbers, and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Bryde’s whales, which frequent Canarian waters in summer. – see the options

August prices

As everywhere, prices vary depending on what you are looking for. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels to 5-star hotels. This makes it difficult to give a precise budget. However, August is the peak of the tourist season. Prices are therefore at their highest, particularly in seaside areas such as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. We strongly advise you to book several months in advance to get the best rates.
