Travelling to Tenerife in March: summary of conditions

Temperatures

Temperatures are mild and pleasant. The thermometer averages 20°C (68°F) to 22°C (72°F) during the day. Nights are cooler, with temperatures around 15°C (59°F). Temperatures rarely rise above 25°C (77°F), making outdoor activities very comfortable.

Water temperatures

The ocean temperature is around 19°C (66°F). Although some people find the water a little chilly, we consider that swimming is still possible, especially in the natural pools and on beaches sheltered from the wind.

Crowds and prizes

March is considered shoulder season in Tenerife. Attendance is moderate, with slightly higher numbers during the European school vacations. Prices are reasonable compared with the high summer season, offering good value for money on accommodation and activities.

Opening conditions

All attractions, restaurants and hotels are open in March. Opening times are extended with the arrival of spring, and we particularly appreciate that tourist sites are less crowded than in summer.

Length of day

Daylight hours average 12 hours in March (but this changes as the month progresses). The sun rises at around 7:30 am and sets at around 7:30 pm, providing beautiful days for exploring the island.

Climate in Tenerife in March – weather forecast

In March, Tenerife enjoys a pleasant spring climate. Conditions are different depending on whether you’re on the north or south coast of the island, or at altitude in the heart of the Teide National Park.

On the south coast

Tenerife’s south coast, especially around Costa Adeje, enjoys a drier, sunnier climate. We particularly like this area for its bright days and mild temperatures. Precipitation is rare and the wind remains moderate. These are ideal conditions for enjoying beaches and outdoor activities.

Punta do Teno

On the north coast

The north of the island, towards Puerto de la Cruz and in Anaga Park, has a slightly more variable climate. There are occasional cloudy spells in the morning, which generally dissipate during the day. Temperatures remain pleasant but can be a little cooler than in the south. This more verdant zone owes its lush vegetation to higher humidity (but nothing to stop you on your vacation!).

In the heights

At higher altitudes, especially around Mount Teide, conditions are very different. We recommend bringing warm clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly, especially at night. The weather is generally clear with excellent visibility, making it an ideal time for stargazing and mountain hiking.

OUR TIPS TO RENT A CAR IN Tenerife
  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
  • But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

Rain and Wind

Rainfall is generally low in Tenerife in March. Once again, there’s a difference between the north and south of the island. The south enjoys a drier climate, while the north can experience occasional showers.

  • Santa Cruz rainfall: 35mm
    (over 3 days on average)
  • Rainfall in Puerto de la Cruz: 45mm
    (over 4 days on average)
  • Rainfall in Los Gigantes: 25mm
    (on average 2 days)
  • Amount of rain in Costa Adeje: 20mm
    (on average 2 days)

The trade winds, characteristic of the Canary archipelago, blow moderately in March. We note that they are more present on the north coast than on the more sheltered south coast. Their intensity generally varies between 15 and 25 km/h, creating a pleasant breeze that tempers the heat.

La Orotava

Sunshine

In March, daylight hours vary from 11:45 to 12:15.
Sunrise is around 7:30 am and sunset around 7:30 pm.

We enjoy generous sunshine, with an average of 7 to 8 hours a day. The skies are generally clear, especially in the south of the island. The north may experience a few cloudy passages in the morning, which often dissipate during the day. Sunshine conditions are ideal for enjoying outdoor activities and the island’s magnificent scenery.

Water temperature – swimming in Tenerife in March

The ocean temperature in March remains relatively cool, but swimming is possible. We particularly recommend natural pools and sheltered coves where the water may be slightly warmer. Beaches in the south generally enjoy more favorable bathing conditions.

  • Santa Cruz water temperature: 19°C (66°F)
  • Water temperature in Puerto de la Cruz: 19°C (66°F)
  • Water temperature at Los Gigantes: 19°C (66°F)
  • Water temperature at Costa Adeje: 19°C (66°F)

Whale and dolphin watching in March

March is an excellent time for whale watching in Tenerife. We particularly recommend boat trips from Los Gigantes or Costa Adeje. The waters around the island are home to a resident population of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, which can be seen all year round. Mild weather conditions in March mean generally calm seas, ideal for sea outings.

March prices

As everywhere, prices vary depending on what you are looking for. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels to 5-star hotels. This makes it difficult to give a precise budget. In March, rates are generally moderate, offering good value for money. However, we note a rise in prices during the European school vacation periods and at Carnival time.
