Is a visit to the Church of La Concepción worthwhile?
Yes, the church is well worth a visit. Listed as a National Monument, it is the city’s oldest building. Theoriginal church underwent numerous extensions and transformations over the following centuries. It therefore reflects the Canaries’ rich historical heritage. In addition to its famous tower (soon to be the subject of a dedicated article), we were captivated by the decorative motifs of its Mudéjar-style coffered ceilings and all its other Baroque ornaments, emblematic ofCanary Island craftsmanship.
What you can see
The Baroque façade with its sculpted portal
We liked the sober, uncluttered style of the facade, where the magnificent carved entrance portal stands out in particular. Made of dark volcanic rock, it is adorned with elaborate details typical of the Baroque period. The heavy wooden door, also carved, is very impressive.
The three-aisle interior
Inside, we discovered three naves with sober white walls. They are separated by columns supporting semicircular arches. Columns and arches are made of dark volcanic stone, contrasting with the immaculate walls. This layout is typical of Canarian architecture.
OUR TIPS TO RENT A CAR IN Tenerife
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.
The perspective of the ceiling beams
We were impressed by the ceiling’s all-wood structure. The alignment of the beams creates a formidable effect of depth above the vaults. Following the collapse of the nave in the early 2000s, the ceiling was completely restored and consolidated.
The ornate choir and its Baroque decorations
The focal point of the church is the richly ornamented choir, featuring a superb, gleaming Baroque altarpiece. We particularly liked the showcase effect created by the dark carved wooden stalls that surround it.
Mudéjar coffered ceilings
At the far end of the building, our favorite feature was the splendid coffered ceiling. You absolutely must look up to admire these masterpieces ofMudejar art. They are composed of carved wooden panels arranged with great precision. Their geometric and floral motifs reflect a blend ofIslamic and Christian influences.
Carved wooden altarpieces
On the white walls of the Church of La Concepción, we admired several dark wood altarpieces. Richly decorated and sculpted, they are part of the incredible religious heritage of the Canary Islands. Some were created by renowned artists.
The side chapels and their hidden treasures
Beneath its marvellous ceilings, the church houses several chapels, some of which have been added to over the centuries. They are proof of the building’s architectural evolution. We were able to see some remarkable works of sacred art, such as this flamboyant Madonna.
The cedar pulpit
The pulpit of the Church of La Concepción is a stunning Baroque piece that we admired at length. Richly carved from cedar wood, it’s considered a one-of-a-kind gem.
The richly worked silver monstrance
We couldn’t miss the monstrance. Its size is impressive. Crafted in finely worked precious metal, this is a magnificent piece of goldsmithing probably made by local artisans.
Colored stained glass
There are few openings in the Church of La Concepción, but the few windows feature colorful stained glass windows that barely filter the light. We loved the chiaroscuro visual atmosphere they helped create. This enriches the spiritual dimension of the visit.
The monumental organ
Opposite the choir, under one of the most beautiful coffered ceilings, the organ seems more recent. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to hear it during our visit.
