The island still has a few hidden gems for you to discover. These hidden spots in Tenerife aren’t entirely “hidden” (nothing ever is), but you’ll find far fewer tourists there.
Volcanoes, beaches, rock formations… Let’s set out to explore Tenerife off the beaten path.
This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Tenerife’s Hidden Gems: Facts, Highlights, Map
Can you really go off the beaten track these days? Not really, no place is really secret. And this notion is a matter of perception.
Here’s a map of the places we’ve selected for you to discover:
We chose places that are less well known, where we saw fewer people and where the tourist buses don’t stop (and which don’t necessarily require a 5-hour walk!).
But by bringing them to the fore, these gems won’t stay hidden!
1. Teno and Its Lunar Landscapes
Why we love
The Teno Mountains offer some of Tenerife’s most stunning and least-visited landscapes. Located at the northwestern tip of the island, this natural park features rock formations that resemble a lunar landscape. We are fascinated by contrasts and colors.
The region is also dotted with small traditional villages that seem frozen in time. We particularly appreciate the authenticity of these hamlets, where the old stone houses bear witness to a rural way of life that has been preserved. Hikes in this area offer a unique experience away from the usual tourist trails.

- We recommend that you start by visiting Masca —which gets very crowded early in the day—so you can leave before the crowds arrive, and then continue on to Teno.
- Wear good walking shoes; the terrain can be rough.
- Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks; services are limited in the area
- The road leading there is narrow and winding in places; please drive carefully.

2. Charco Los Chochos
Why we love
Charco Los Chochos is a natural pool located near Garachico, far from the usual tourist areas. We love this place for its authentic setting and peaceful atmosphere. These natural rock pools fill with seawater, creating perfect swimming spots.
What makes this place special is its wild and unspoiled nature. We particularly appreciate the volcanic rock formations that surround the pools and offer a fascinating sight when the waves crash against them. It’s the perfect place to witness the power of the ocean.

3. La Orotava
Why we love
La Orotava is one of the most charming towns in Tenerife, yet it is often overlooked by traditional tourist itineraries. We are captivated by its perfectly preserved historic center, with its cobblestone streets and colonial houses featuring finely carved pine balconies. The city offers an authentic immersion in traditional Canarian architecture and culture.
We especially enjoy the Victoria Gardens, with their exotic plants and breathtaking views of the Orotava Valley and Mount Teide in the background. Historic churches such as the Church of La Concepción are also worth a visit for their artistic treasures.
Whether it’s really a hidden gem is up for debate, but we ran into just as many tourists there as we did in Garachico or Icod de los Vinos…

4. Zapatos de la Reina Lookout
Why we love
When tourists visit Teide National Park, they rush to Roque de Garcia, the cable car, and Minas de San José. And it’s true—the places there are exceptional.
But there are other stops along the way where it will be easier to park and which offer beautiful views.
At Zapatos de la Reina, you have a beautiful view of Mount Teide. But don’t stop there—take the trail that leads you, in just a few minutes, to a fun rock formation shaped like a high-heeled shoe.

- Mornings are often the best time to avoid clouds that might block the view
- Bring a jacket, even in the summer, because it can get chilly at higher elevations
- A small parking lot is available, but it’s rarely full
5. San Juan de la Rambla and Charco de La Laja
Why we love
San Juan de la Rambla is a charming, traditional coastal village that has retained its Canarian character. We’re charmed by its cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and peaceful atmosphere. But what really makes this place famous among locals is the Charco de La Laja, a magnificent natural pool formed by volcanic rocks.
We particularly appreciate the contrast between the turquoise water of the pool and the black volcanic rocks. The area is usually quiet on weekdays, but gets busier on weekends when the island’s residents come to spend the day there with their families.

6. Playa del Roque de las Bodegas

Playa del Roque de las Bodegas is a beach located in the Anaga Mountains, far from the usual tourist areas. We are captivated by this place where the impressive, lush green mountains of Anaga meet the ocean. This black volcanic sand beach offers a pristine and authentic natural setting.
What makes this beach so special is its wild, untamed character, its rocks, and the steep cliffs that surround it. We particularly appreciate the contrasting colors of the black sand, the blue ocean, and the lush mountain vegetation.

7. Benijo Beach
Why we love
Playa de Benijo is one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking beaches in Tenerife. We are fascinated by its spectacular setting, with its rocks and cliffs that plunge into the sea. This black volcanic sand beach offers an authentic experience far from tourist resorts.
What makes Benijo so special is its relative seclusion, which ensures that it’s never crowded. The rock formations at sea, particularly the Roques de Anaga, offer remarkable opportunities for photography and add to the uniqueness of this place.

8. Cueva del Viento
Why we love
The Cueva del Viento (Cave of the Wind) is one of Tenerife’s lesser-known geological treasures. We are impressed by this network of volcanic tunnels, which forms the largest lava tube in Europe and the fifth largest in the world. Exploring these underground galleries offers a fascinating insight into the island’s geological formation and its volcanic past.

- Guided tours only; advance reservations required
- Wear comfortable clothing, long pants, and sturdy closed-toe shoes
- The temperature in the cave is constant (16–18°C), so be sure to bring a light jacket
- The tour lasts about 2 hours, including 1 hour inside the cave
- Not recommended for people with claustrophobia or limited mobility
- The access road to the parking lot is very steep.
9. Tajao Arch
Why we love
The Arco de Tajao is a natural rock formation located on the southeastern coast of Tenerife. We are fascinated by this volcanic arch, carved by marine erosion over the centuries. This natural monument offers a geological spectacle in a setting untouched by mass tourism.

10. Punta de Teno at sunrise
Why we love
Punta de Teno is one of the westernmost points on Tenerife, offering breathtaking scenery and a “end-of-the-world” atmosphere. We are captivated by the vertiginous cliffs that plunge into the ocean, the iconic lighthouse, and the breathtaking views of Los Gigantes. This protected area has retained its wild and natural character.
What makes this place so special is its seclusion and the access restrictions that limit the number of tourists. We especially appreciate the tranquility there and the power of the elements that you can feel there.
We recommend visiting at sunrise to experience an even more spectacular atmosphere and colors.

11. Taganana
Why we love
Taganana is a picturesque village nestled in the mountains of the Anaga Range, far from the usual tourist routes. We are charmed by its narrow streets, traditional white houses, and authentic atmosphere that seems frozen in time. This mountain village offers a glimpse into rural life in the Canary Islands, untouched by modern influences.
We particularly enjoy the breathtaking views of the ocean and the terraced farmlands, which reflect traditional farming methods. The church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves is small but charming

Stargazing on Mount Teide is an extraordinary experience that many visitors are unaware of. We are amazed by the exceptional quality of Tenerife’s night sky, recognized as one of the best in the world for stargazing.
The high altitude, fresh air, and low light pollution create ideal conditions for gazing at the universe in all its splendor. What makes this experience so special is the sense of vastness and connection to the cosmos that it provides.
