The best natural swimming pools in Tenerife: tips + map
In Tenerife, you’ll find several natural pools around the island, with lava rocks or man-made walls of seawater.
But there’s much more to do in the region: see our guide.
Here is a map to help you find your way:

If you only need to do 2, we recommend it:
- Piscinas Naturales Los Abrigos
- El Caleton in Garachico, especially at high tide to see the waves crashing.
First and foremost, we would like to remind you that the natural pools appear mainly at low tide, but that tidal coefficients are more or less important.
Be careful not to stay too long after low tide, as the waves can crash over the pool rocks.
Safety first!
1. Piscinas Naturales Los Abrigos

Why we love
Sculpted over time by the movement of the ocean, these natural pools offer a peaceful setting where turquoise water mingles with the raging waves of the open sea. They are among the most beautiful natural pools on the island, and must-do activities in El Médano. They totally seduced us. Although it’s off the beaten tourist track, it’s still a popular spot.
We particularly appreciated the view of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding cliffs, offering a breathtaking panorama. The atmosphere is peaceful, punctuated by the soothing sound of waves breaking on the rocks. This unspoilt site, shaped by volcanic rock, is an alternative to Tenerife’s more touristy beaches.

- From Santa Cruz de Tenerife = 50 min drive
- From Puerto de La Cruz = 1h10 drive
- From Costa Adeje = 20 min drive

- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

2. Garachico – El Caleton

Why we love
El Caleton in Garachico is a natural gem that bears witness to Tenerife’s volcanic history. We were fascinated by these natural pools formed during the eruption of 1706, which transformed the geography of the region. The water is remarkably clear, inviting you to swim and explore at low tide. But our favorite time is at high tide, when the waves crash against the volcanic rocks.
The site offers several pools of different sizes and depths, so there’s something for everyone. The respectful layout of the site, with stairs and platforms, facilitates access while preserving the natural appearance of the site. We particularly liked the peaceful atmosphere here, despite its popularity. The harmonious blend of raw nature and design touches is a success.

3. Charco de los Chochos

Why we love
The Charco de los Chochos is a small natural wonder nestling on the north coast of Tenerife. We were charmed by the intimacy of this spot, which is less well-known than other natural pools on the island, as it is further away from the tourist towns.
The environment is wild and unspoilt. It offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. We enjoyed the quietness of the place. The rock formations surrounding the pool create sheltered coves, ideal for relaxing in the sun. The marine biodiversity visible in the shallow waters adds a fascinating dimension of exploration to the visit.

5. Charco de Isla Cangrejo / Piscina Natural Acantilado de Los Gigantes

Why we love
The Charco de Isla Cangrejo, also known as the Piscina Natural Acantilado de Los Gigantes, is located opposite the easy-going village of Los Gigantes. We were fascinated by the beauty of this site, nestled at the foot of the cliffs.
A walk on the heights offers plenty of perspective. We strongly advise you to take a walk there at high tide to see the waves crashing. It’s an experience for all the senses.
But no swimming at high tide!

10. Laja de sal in Puerto de la Cruz

Why we love
Although closed to the public for the time being, the Laja de Sal in Puerto de la Cruz remains a remarkable site to admire from the heights. This former natural saltworks, now transformed into a swimming pool, bears witness to the ingenuity of the island’s inhabitants in making the most of its natural resources. The contrast between the deep blue of the ocean, the black of the volcanic rock and the white of the crashing waves creates a striking picture.
