Are you looking for a wild beach with an exceptional natural setting in Tenerife? Playa de la Tejita, also known as Playa de la Montaña Roja, offers a unique landscape dominated by the volcanic cone of Montaña Roja. We were seduced by this stretch of black sand, which combines natural beauty with practical facilities.
In this article, you’ll find our photos and tips on how to make the most of this pleasant interlude by the ocean.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Is Playa de la Montaña Roja worth it?
Yes, it’s a beautiful beach and well worth a visit. This wild beach won us over with its exceptional natural setting and unique location at the foot of Montaña Roja. We particularly appreciated the authenticity of the site, which retains its natural character while offering essential facilities. The surrounding volcanic landscape creates a unique atmosphere that sets this beach apart from the rest of the island’s tourist beaches.
This is one of Tenerife’s most beautiful natural beaches!

Type of beach
Sand or no sand?
The beach floor is made up of coarse black sand and chunks of volcanic rock. The beach extends over a considerable length and width, offering generous space for stretching out and sunbathing in complete tranquillity.

Swimming conditions and supervision
Swimming conditions are excellent, with a gentle, gradual slope making it easy to enter the water. The beach also offers excellent snorkeling opportunities along the Montaña Roja, where rock formations create an interesting marine environment. What’s more, the beach is supervised in high season.

Installations
Despite its wild, unspoilt setting, the beach offers deckchair hire for your comfort. We noticed that there is no natural shade, which makes renting umbrellas particularly useful too. However, we didn’t see any showers or toilets on site.

Playa de la Tejita in Tenerife: how to get there
Where’s the beach?
- Southeast of the island of Tenerife,
- In the seaside resort of El Médano,
- 10min drive from Tenerife South Airport,
- South of Playa del Médano,
- At the foot of Montaña Roja.
Access by car and parking
To reach the beach by car, follow the TF-643 road towards El Médano, stopping before the mountain. Parking is available, identified by the “Montaña Roja” sign. We must warn you that the ground in the parking lot is very uneven, with many bumps, requiring careful driving.

OUR TIPS TO RENT A CAR IN Tenerife
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

Access from the parking lot
From the parking lot, follow a sandy path to the beach, with Montaña Roja visible on your left. We found the path to be well signposted and made up of sand. This short approach walk is part of the charm of this natural beach, allowing you to gradually appreciate the surrounding volcanic landscape. The Montaña Roja is a protected site, so don’t stray off the marked path.

Public transport access
The “La Tejita” bus stop is a 10-15 minute walk from the beach. Lines 410, 470 and 483 pass through it. Find out about public transport timetables on the official titsa network website here.

Special features
Dog
Dogs are allowed for a walk in the Montaña Roja Nature Reserve, but we couldn’t find any specific information about the beach.

Reduced mobility access
There are no special facilities for disabled access. Access to this natural beach is via a sand and rock path, which can present difficulties for wheelchair users.

With children
The gradual, gentle slope makes it easy for children to get into the water. We have observed that families appreciate the safe bathing conditions, although effective sun protection is needed due to the lack of natural shade on this exposed beach.

Naturism
It is possible to practice naturism on part of this beach.
Eating out
There are no restaurants directly on site, which contributes to the wild, unspoilt character of the beach. We recommend that you bring your own provisions for the day, or eat in the seaside resort of El Médano, a 5-minute drive away, and especially in the Tanteo Restaurant for a lunch facing the Montaña Roja.

Hotels
El Médano’s hotel offer is not of the highest quality, so we suggest you take a look at our recommendations below for a pleasant stay on the island:
