Looking for history and culture in Gran Canaria? Visit the Castillo de la Luz, also known as the Martín Chirino Foundation. It’s the island’s oldest fortress and a center for the arts. The harmony of its 15th-century architecture and its refined interior design sublimates the contemporary works of local artist Martín Chirino. We were blown away!
Here are some useful tips for planning your visit to the Castillo de la Luz in Las Palmas.

Is a visit to the Castillo de la Luz worthwhile?
Without a doubt! Located to the north of Las Palmas, the Castillo de la Luz dates back to the 15th century and played an important defensive role. We were charmed by its sturdy towers and stone walls. The site, imposing from the outside, also surprised us with its inner finesse. Now a cultural exhibition center and art foundation, it was redesigned by the talented Nieto Sobejano architectural studio in 2014 and houses works by the famous Canarian sculptor Martín Chirino. We think the location is superb!
This is one of the best activities in Las Palmas!
What you can see
A beautiful fortress
As soon as we arrived, we were impressed by the fortress and its sturdiness. All in stone, it stands out in the more modern landscape of this part of Las Palmas.
Towers and walls
Like us, take a tour of the castillo. You can admire its towers and walls.
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.
A luminous inner courtyard
After passing the small entrance and a stone corridor, we landed in an open-air courtyard, the former parade ground. The castle’s name, which means light in Spanish, made perfect sense to us!
The new fortress
The inside of the fortress is very different from the outside! The Nieto Sobejano architectural studio has redesigned the space with minimalism. We loved the combination of contemporary design and 15th-century stonework!
Sculptures by Martín Chirino
Scattered throughout the tour, Martín Chirino’s slender iron sculptures caught our eye. Their slender curves make them the perfect space dwellers!
Alonso Fajardo’s tower
We ventured into Alonso Fajardo’s tower and contemplated sculptures, stone ruins and immaculate architecture. The lighting is once again designed to enhance the space!
A piece of the 19th century
A section of the castle’s former floor still exists, bearing witness to the various constructions and occupations of the fort. Take the time to observe it!
A glass floor
During your visit, pay attention to the floor, which also plays with light. We were amazed that it was made of glass in some places!
A series of drawings
Several black and white drawings of spirals revealed another facet of Martín Chirino’s art.
Large paintings
A little further on, large, almost monochrome paintings adorn the white walls of the fortress. They reminded us of the paintings of Pierre Soulages.
A film about the artist
Sit back and watch a film about the artist and his work. An opportunity to take a short break.
Loopholes and a metal staircase
Our visit ended with an exploration of a room with beautiful loopholes, pierced by blue skies. A superb metal staircase dominates the room.
