Nestled on the west coast of Gran Canaria between the two pretty towns of Puerto de Mogan and Puerto Rico, Playa del Cura is a pleasant beach ideal for sunbathing and swimming! We also enjoyed the scenery. The view of the dark mountains and volcanic rocks is very beautiful!

Is Playa del Cura worth it?
Yes, it’s a beautiful beach! Located in western Gran Canaria near Puerto Rico, Playa del Cura is distinguished by its dark sand and black lava rock formations. We enjoyed walking around and appreciated its calm.
Type of beach
Sand or no sand?
The beach floor is made of fine sand, a mixture of black and blond sand.
We loved dipping our toes in. At the end of the beach, you’ll be able to admire huge volcanic rocks.
Swimming conditions and supervision
We found the conditions ideal for swimming and bathing. The sea is gentle and the soil in the water sandy. The beach is supervised.
Installations
We found showers along the beach. We didn’t see any toilets.
You can rent umbrellas and deckchairs by the day to enjoy the sun in comfort!

Access by car and parking
The beach is accessible via the GC-1 road. We parked along the road near the traffic circle. Parking spaces are limited. Arrive early in high season.
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.
Public transport access
Buses 1, 9 or 33 can drop you off at the Playa del Cura stop near the beach.
Special features
Dog
Dogs are not allowed on the beach. We saw this on the information panel at the entrance to the site, which lists the prohibitions.
Reduced mobility access
There is an access path, a slope, to access the beach to allow access for people with reduced mobility.
With children
The beach is ideal for a family outing. The sea is relatively calm, the access to the water is sandy and there’s plenty of opportunity to make superb sandcastles!
Naturism
It is not possible to practice naturism on this beach.
Eating out
There are a few restaurants near the beach. You can also visit Puerto Rico, where we’ve unearthed some great addresses!
