OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.
Is the Occidental Roca Negra Adults Only Hotel worth it? Our review
Absolutely! Located in the charming town ofAgaete in the northwest of the island, this establishment is the ideal place to relax and enjoy Gran Canaria‘s natural treasures. We had a great time there. The staff’s friendly service, the swimming pools, the view of the sea and the dark mountains will delight all holidaymakers in search of relaxation and nature.
This is one of our favorite hotels in Agaete!
Decoration and atmosphere
We liked the modern decor. Communal areas are furnished with contemporary furniture and bright colors to create a tropical atmosphere. You’ll also love the sunny terraces and shady relaxation areas, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the gentle sea breeze!
The room
Our room, a junior suite, was spacious, bright and comfortable. We appreciated the designer ceiling light.
When we arrived, macaroons were waiting for us! We also had a kettle for making tea or coffee and a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate our stay. Little touches that touched us.
The balcony, equipped with armchairs and a table, was a plus. We didn’t have a view of the cliffs overlooking the hotel, but of the volcano and the bay. A panorama worth seeing!

The bathroom
The bathroom had a shower. We found quality organic hygiene products, a bathrobe and slippers. We were a little disappointed by the condition of the shower head. It appeared to require repair or replacement.
The breakfast
Breakfast was served in a room accessible by stairs. It was presented in buffet style. We also had the option of tasting a la carte dishes such as pancakes and omelettes. The varied choice of products on offer was appreciated, whether sweet (pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurts, etc.) or savoury (cheeses, cold meats, ready-made meals, raw vegetables, etc.). A great way to start the day!
Swimming pools and beaches
We took advantage of the resort’s 3 outdoor pools to cool off and swim. One of them is a whirlpool bath! You can also stretch out on comfortable sun loungers or large Balinese beds. The ideal place to admire the view of the sea and the volcano!
The hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the beautiful Las Salinas natural pools. In our opinion, they are the most beautiful in Gran Canaria(see our list)! We had a great time in the 3 different pools, which are interconnected by small underwater tunnels. Hold your breath and swim from one to the other.
Equipment and common areas
The Occidental Roca Negra Hotel has a gym so that those who want to keep fit can do so during their stay.
There’s also a spa and wellness area offering a wide range of treatments. Relax with a massage or a beauty treatment to recharge your batteries! We also saw large meeting rooms used for seminars.
The restoration
There’s a bar by the pool. It’s a great place to sip a drink and go for a swim afterwards!
On the roof terrace, another bar overlooks the bay. The view at sunset is very beautiful. We also liked the warm, subdued atmosphere at night.
For dinner or lunch, you can take advantage of the hotel restaurant, which offers a buffet of local and international specialities. World cuisine on the menu!
History
The Occidental Roca Negra Hotel in Agaete was built right in front of basalt rock, overlooking an impressive cliff. It stands out for its unique location between Volcan Teide, the town and the sea. You can also take a stroll around the establishment to enjoy the scenery in a different way.
