Where to stay in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria): best neighborhoods
Why sleep in Las Palmas?
Sleeping in Las Palmas offered us an unforgettable experience, combining sandy beaches and lively nightlife. It’s also a good base for exploring Gran Canaria’s north coast and discovering the island’s wide range of restaurants. You’ll be surprised by the variety of accommodations: from luxury resorts to small, charming hotels in the historic district of Vegueta. With a mild climate all year round, outdoor activities include surfing, scuba diving, hiking in the waterfalls or simply relaxing on the famous Playa de Las Canteras. The local cuisine offers a wide choice of fresh seafood and typical Canarian dishes.
It’s one of the most popular places to stay in Gran Canaria!
Best places to stay in Las Palmas: map
Here’s our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Las Palmas:
Sleep along Playa de Las Canteras
Staying near Playa de Las Canteras means opting for Las Palmas’ main urban beach to the north. In fact, we’ve listed it among the most beautiful beaches on the island. Sleeping in the old town of Las Palmas
Did you know that the Vegueta (or Veguet) district in the south of Las Palmas is the historic heart of the capital? This 15th-century district is home to numerous monuments, including the Canary Cathedral and the Casa de Colon. We loved wandering through the narrow streets with their colorful buildings steeped in history. You’ll feel the soul of Las Palmas and enjoy the city’s rich culture. In fact, we’ve listed this mythical district in our ideas for the best things to do on Gran Canaria!

Sleeping near the port and Playa de la Alcaravaneras
On the Playa de Las Alcaranaveras beach side, the area is quieter. Close to the port, you’ll have a view of many boats: sailboats, catamarans… Many cruises leave from or dock here! You can also take advantage of the large stretch of sand on the beach for a stroll with your feet in the water, or a pleasant jog with a sea view. We also noticed that many locals played sports on the beach, including beach volleyball, soccer and canoeing.

- Less crowded beach (more space and more peace and quiet)

Our favorite hotels:
- Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel (5 stars) – see photos and availability
- Hotel Boutique La Palmera (3 stars) – see photos and availability
Other useful tips to keep in mind
- The Canary Islands are popular destinations all year round. Although the peak season in the northern hemisphere is winter, the climate is ideal for year-round visits. A destination with year-round sunshine means crowds, which means anticipation! Remember to book your accommodation as early as possible, as Las Palmas is a very popular city.
- Within the capital, you can use public transport to get around if you don’t want to drive into town. In fact, the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus offers a circuit that serves many of Las Palmas’ tourist districts as well as its main beaches. Remember to reserve your ticket in advance. You can also rent a car if you want to explore the island on your own.
- If you’re staying in the center of town and renting a car, be sure to check the parking conditions. It can be difficult to find space around the old town and Playa de Las Alcaravaneras.
- Las Palmas is a city with a vibrant cultural life! Did you know that in January and February, the island’s capital also holds its own carnival? Music, color, iconic costumes, glitter, excitement and euphoria are all on the agenda! You’ll have an unforgettable experience at this time of year, but it’s also when you’ll come across more tourists. Find out more about the Las Palmas Carnival here.
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.
