OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.
Is Hotel Santa Catalina, A Royal Hideaway worth it? Our review
Absolutely! In our opinion, it meets all the expectations of a 5-star hotel. The staff were exceptional. We even shared a little laugh on arrival. The breakfast was delicious, the rooms beautiful and comfortable and the pools very pleasant! It also boasts some excellent restaurants and is relatively close to Las Palmas’ attractions and beaches. We were delighted with our stay.
Decoration and atmosphere
We liked the hotel decor! Skilfully blending contemporary luxury with a touch of Spanish baroque, the premises offer an elegant, modern yet typical atmosphere. The turrets with their ornate roofs, balconies and tree-lined patios immersed us in the sunny, Hispanic atmosphere of the Canary Islands. You’ll be amazed!
The room
Our room was comfortable. We particularly liked the fluffy headboard and the mirrored TV! The terrace, with its 2 armchairs and table, was also a plus. It opened onto a pretty Spanish patio adorned with palm trees. The ideal place to read and relax.

The bathroom
The bathroom was equipped with a large central island bathtub. A real luxury! The water pressure was also excellent. We found hygiene products from The Lab Room cosmetics brand, a bathrobe and slippers at our disposal. The teak wall divider was also a success.
The breakfast
Breakfast at Hotel Santa Catalina was served buffet style. We particularly appreciated the homemade products. Cooked dishes, pancakes, omelettes on request and mouth-watering cakes delighted us. The choice of sweet (viennoiseries, fresh-cut fruit, yoghurts…) or savoury (cheeses, charcuterie, ready-made meals, raw vegetables, salmon…), was excellent. This is the best breakfast we’ve tried in Gran Canaria!
Swimming pools and beaches
Hotel Santa Catalina has 3 swimming pools. The largest, at the foot of the hotel, is long and surrounded by greenery. We also enjoyed the rooftop infinity pool. A third pool is dedicated to the spa. Relax and refresh!
The establishment is right next to Las Alcavaneras beach. It’s not our favorite beach, but luckily the hotel isn’t far from Las Palmas’ most beautiful beaches either, such as Playa Chica or Playa Peña de la Vieja. Allow 10 minutes by car to get there.
Equipment and common areas
A spacious gym with Matrix equipment awaits those who want to stay in shape!
A spa with thermal circuit, whirlpools and Turkish baths also welcomes relaxation enthusiasts. We almost gave in to the temptation of a massage!
The restoration
The hotel’s restaurant offer is quite exceptional. It has 2 bars, a piano bar at the entrance and a bar on the roof terrace with a pleasant view of the surrounding area. But above all, the establishment is home to 3 restaurants, including 2 Michelin-starred ones! Restaurant Poemas by hermanos Padrón will tantalize your taste buds with its gourmet cuisine, while Restaurant Muxgo by Borja will introduce you to Gran Canaria’s exceptional produce.
History
The Hotel Santa Catalina’s decor and sense of hospitality are in keeping with Hispanic culture. It is also home to the first restaurant in Spain to be awarded a Michelin green star. Indeed, we were surprised to learn that Restaurant Muxgo uses local cuisine and values Km0!
