Why is Palmitos Park famous?

Palmitos Park is renowned as one of the best wildlife parks in the Canaries and Gran Canaria. It is located in an exceptional natural setting, the Barranco de los Palmitos valley, hence its name. It also helps protect biodiversity and vulnerable species. We appreciate this approach.

    History in brief

The park was founded in 1978 in Gran Canaria. We were surprised to learn that in 2007, the site had suffered a fire. Since its renovation, it has been home to over 200 plant species and 500 animals. The park is also committed to preserving biodiversity and raising awareness of the need to protect it.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria
    • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
    • If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
    • But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
    • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

    Best time to visit

The summer season attracts more people. If you plan to visit the park at this time of year, we advise you to come on weekday mornings. In winter, your visit will be a little quieter.

Length of visit and main difficulties

Covering more than 24 hectares, the park is quite large. We recommend you allow 2 to 4 hours to explore the entire site. Apart from the size of the park, there are no particular difficulties to visit.

    Advice on how to visit

There’s a set direction for the visit. Follow the signs and arrows. We first saw the meerkats and reptiles near the entrance. A path then led us to several aviaries and the orchid house. From here, you can see a large waterfall with parrots and walk around it. Continue with the cactus garden, butterfly greenhouse and aquariums. Finish the tour with Monkey Island and other surprises that will lead you to the exit.

Here’s a map of the park to help you find your way around.

    The dolphinarium

The park is home to a dolphin pool which, in the middle of this semi-arid valley, really did feel out of place. It is located next to the Bleu Reef. Dolphin shows are offered during tours.
