Is Candelaria worth a visit?
Yes, Candelaria is well worth a visit. We were touched by the spiritual dimension of this place, the most important pilgrimage site in the Canaries. The majestic basilica, statues of the Guanche kings and volcanic waterfront create a unique atmosphere that combines history, culture and natural beauty.
It’s one of Tenerife’s most beautiful towns.
If you don’t have a car, you can discover it on organized tours. See options.
1. Stroll through the center

The heart of the city unfolds around the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of this square dominated by the imposing basilica. The surrounding alleyways are an invitation to explore, with their traditional Canarian facades. You’ll notice the typical island architecture, characterized by wooden balconies and walls in ochre and white tones. The square is the ideal starting point for exploring. We found the atmosphere particularly pleasant in the late afternoon, when pilgrims and visitors mingle with the locals. Take time to observe the architectural details and enjoy the lively atmosphere of this meeting place.
- Centrally located
- Free access at all times
- Nearby parking lots
2. Visit the Basilica of Candelaria

The Basilica of Candelaria is one of the most majestic on the island. This sanctuary houses the venerated image of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. The building has three naves and a magnificent Mudejar-style roof.
We were particularly struck by the 25-metre-high dome that dominates the interior. The most remarkable feature is the 45-meter-high tower, adorned with a typical Canarian balcony.
The main chapel houses the sacred image of the Virgin Mary in a sumptuous setting. You can admire the architectural details and feel the spiritual intensity that emanates from this place of pilgrimage. We recommend that you enter outside church hours to fully appreciate the serenity of the setting.

OUR TIPS TO RENT A CAR IN Tenerife
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don ‘t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
- But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early.

3. Discover the statues of Los Menceyes

The statues of Los Menceyes fascinated us with their imposing presence. These nine monumental sculptures represent the Guanche kings who ruled Tenerife before the Spanish conquest. Sculpted by José Abad and inaugurated in 1993, they face the sea with their backs to the basilica.
These bronze figures, over four metres high, offer a unique spectacle. Enjoy the details of faces and postures. The whole is an impressive tribute to the Guanche people.
- Located on the esplanade facing the sea
- Free access at all times
- Excellent sunset photo spot
4. Playa Candelaria

Playa Candelaria is a large urban beach of black sand and pebbles. We appreciated its volcanic character, typical of the Canaries. Bordered by the waterfront, it offers a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can swim or simply stroll along the shore.
Other nearby beaches include Playa del Alacalde, a small, more intimate beach of pebbles and black sand. We found the beaches pleasant for a relaxing break after visiting the monuments. The contrast between the dark volcanic sand and the blue of the ocean creates a singular landscape. You’ll appreciate the authenticity of these beaches, which are less touristy than those in the south of the island.
- Free access all year round
- Facilities: showers and shaded areas
- Parking lots near the waterfront

5. Stroll along the seafront and Gruta de los Camellos

We really enjoyed the walk along the seafront, from Puerto de Candelaria to Gruta de los Camellos. This pleasant stroll is accompanied by the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the jetty. The path runs alongside the ocean, offering beautiful views of the basilica and surrounding mountains.
Along the way, don’t miss the Grotta de Achbinico, the first temple dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria. It houses a reproduction of the icon of the Virgin Mary in a striking natural setting. We found this walk particularly relaxing at the end of the day. You can watch the local fishermen and enjoy the town’s maritime atmosphere. The waterfront is accessible and suitable for everyone.

7. Meditate in the Parroquia de Santa Ana de Candelaria

The Parroquia de Santa Ana de Candelaria is one of Tenerife’s oldest parishes. We were struck by the simplicity and authenticity of this church, which contrasts with the grandeur of the basilica. Its architecture bears witness to the town’s ancient religious history. You’ll discover a more intimate atmosphere than in the basilica. The church is located slightly away from the tourist center, giving it a peaceful character.
