The harmony of its 15th-century architecture and its refined interior design sublimates the contemporary works of local artist Mart\u00edn Chirino. Located to the north of Las Palmas, the Castillo de la Luz dates back to the 15th century and played an important defensive role. We were charmed by its sturdy towers and stone walls. The site, imposing from the outside, also surprised us with its inner finesse. Now a cultural exhibition center and art foundation, it was redesigned by the talented Nieto Sobejano architectural studio in 2014 and houses works by the famous Canarian sculptor Mart\u00edn Chirino. The castle&#8217;s name, which means light in Spanish, made perfect sense to us!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The new fortress<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Castle-of-La-Luz\/i-KWdw55g\/0\/MbkbjTzW9bKPFF64hPqXWznXqwn4sz7dM228dZ5SW\/L\/gran-canaria-castillo-luz-las-palmas-10-L.jpg\" alt=\"Showroom\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The inside of the fortress is very different from the outside! The Nieto Sobejano architectural studio has redesigned the space with minimalism. We loved the combination of contemporary design and 15th-century stonework!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sculptures by Mart\u00edn Chirino<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Castle-of-La-Luz\/i-RZPbPD2\/0\/M8SZKCC9GvbGb9Tq88t3D9GQrFXQXcMgQRXFn9qKV\/L\/castle-la-luz-las-palmas-gran-canaria-3-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sculptures\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Scattered throughout the tour, Mart\u00edn Chirino&#8217;s slender iron sculptures caught our eye. Their slender curves make them the perfect space dwellers!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alonso Fajardo&#8217;s tower<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Castle-of-La-Luz\/i-KKLXcCj\/0\/KJJSLdk82QXGVPFN8bKBmxSRdGcvf5sHXgMhrRvm3\/L\/gran-canaria-castillo-luz-las-palmas-17-L.jpg\" alt=\"Room\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We ventured into Alonso Fajardo&#8217;s tower and contemplated sculptures, stone ruins and immaculate architecture. The lighting is once again designed to enhance the space!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A piece of the 19th century<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Castle-of-La-Luz\/i-MGQD67s\/0\/LQn6h6VWcKLGFm56MzKvjJPhgTH3hTqj2ds9qzkvc\/L\/gran-canaria-castillo-luz-las-palmas-09-L.jpg\" alt=\"Soil\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>A section of the castle&#8217;s former floor still exists, bearing witness to the various constructions and occupations of the fort. We were amazed that it was made of glass in some places!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A series of drawings<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Castle-of-La-Luz\/i-Mxgvbcm\/0\/NPPxFpxvndr6ScnHM77vJ63t9QHS6BmRNSZFdLmwG\/L\/gran-canaria-castillo-luz-las-palmas-11-L.jpg\" alt=\"Drawings\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Several black and white drawings of spirals revealed another facet of Mart\u00edn Chirino&#8217;s art.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Large paintings<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Castle-of-La-Luz\/i-xFZg5xT\/0\/MZ3XRQrX29fmVpXWsW7W3LqV3Mj2jvvZ9Pzm59g4n\/L\/gran-canaria-castillo-luz-las-palmas-13-L.jpg\" alt=\"Tables\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>A little further on, large, almost monochrome paintings adorn the white walls of the fortress.
