We were intrigued by the 2 lions displaying the coats of arms, seemingly standing guard. The portal is topped on the right by a wooden balcony typical of the town&#8217;s historic houses.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mudejar-style patios<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-qR8vCc9\/0\/DCmWXcGjptLNWstFVdwMRVD9kVXmzKs4XQXTCvB4N\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_patio-L.jpg\" alt=\"Patio door, Casa de Colon museum, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Casa de Col\u00f3n is a collection of buildings that did not exist at the time of Christopher Columbus. The Governor&#8217;s Palace, where Columbus is thought to have stayed, was demolished to make way for new homes built between the 18th and 20th centuries. Their patios were preserved when the museum was created. Its life-size replica gave us a better understanding of the sailing conditions aboard these small sailing ships used in the 15th century.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maps of Columbus&#8217;s voyages<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-L6sp9mx\/0\/DQ53JdJWFNzhwxJmqBVZCVtmvM3rSDnMFmjShng4\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_tripmap-L.jpg\" alt=\"map of Colombus first trip to America, museum Casa de Colon, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Explanatory maps give a better understanding of the 4 voyages made by Columbus to conquer America. Some are very old. We were able to admire a facsimile of the famous &#8220;Universalis Cosmographia&#8221; map dating from 1507. These rare documents show how the world was seen in Europe during the Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wooden model boats<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-pwmq6j5\/0\/CSGfhSWTP4ZKNQvX7h9zJK2L9XVMpwzwtkFwL33bL\/L\/casa-de-colon-museum-las-palmas-gran-canaria-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"ship models, museum Casa de Colon, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We really enjoyed seeing the detailed wooden models of the 3 ships used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the Americas in 1492: the Ni\u00f1a, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. These early models, along with the presence of voyage maps, offer a vivid insight into the Colombian adventure.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Burgos Laws manuscript<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-VdHF8mC\/0\/DxLSkSvwPX5sPm3ThccdkXS8bFfnX2jJxrmZFHk59\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_burgos_laws-L.jpg\" alt=\"Burgos laws, Casa de Colon museum, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We were able to see a facsimile of the precious Burgos Laws manuscript, dating from 1512. These laws were intended to regulate relations between Spanish colonists and the indigenous populations of the New World. They were intended to protect the rights of Native Americans. Unfortunately, they were rarely applied.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The will of Queen Isabel La Catholique<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-rF8jdm8\/0\/DvsqZLLnx2kBwJ3RsB9vcq8RN6bWmW35ZZVb5fcJq\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_isabel_will-L.jpg\" alt=\"Queen Isabel will, museum Casa de Colon, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>A facsimile of Queen Isabel La Catholique&#8217;s will is also on display at the Casa de Col\u00f3n Museum. It is dated 1504. The Queen recognized the rights of freedom and property of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands and the American continent.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The book of Columbus&#8217;s travel accounts<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-DhQmFvw\/0\/CZTT4x3t3qw2Q26wk95PZtXmdQz7XZFt6MrsPWg7G\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_colombus_book-L.jpg\" alt=\"Columbus diary, Casa de Colon museum, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The handwritten copy of Christopher Columbus&#8217;s logbook moved us. In it, the great navigator recounts his 4 voyages to the Americas between 1492 and 1504, and bears witness to the discovery of the New World. There are detailed descriptions of the places and people encountered.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical paintings of the Spanish Conquest<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-5RBxgVf\/0\/3rTGHRZnMzBrhzBfrrrFLJRpNWKQN4bqF7QLx3Nd\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_conquista_paintings-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish conquest paintings, museum Casa de Colon, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We explored with great interest the rooms devoted to Spanish paintings relating to the colonization of the Americas. These works, dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries, depict the beginnings of the Spanish colonial empire, the role of the Church and the interactions between the conquistadors and the indigenous populations.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The magnificent ceilings of the Casa de Col\u00f3n<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-LMDKvRD\/0\/qm8LTfBh6wghndjqdz2bwmd6jJkDJBBbh4QCdfNk\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_ceiling-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sculpted ceiling, museum Casa de Colon, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The museum&#8217;s ceilings caught our eye, so remarkable are they. This is probably what we liked best about the building. We were able to visualize the architectural and urban changes in the capital of the Canary Islands, immersing ourselves in its fascinating history.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The navigational instruments of the great explorers<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Casa-de-Col&#xF3;n-Museum\/i-66KpDNP\/0\/nS9vhRfWX5zsT4m66kgjkHdpqKSBLpbQsbqzTQGT\/L\/casa_de_colon_las_palmas_gran_canaria_navigation_tool-L.jpg\" alt=\"Navigation map, museum Casa de Colon, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We also really enjoyed learning about the navigation techniques used by maritime explorers in the days of Christopher Columbus.
