It is a blend of particularly remarkable <strong>architectural styles<\/strong> (Neoclassical, Renaissance and Gothic), as its construction began in the early <strong>16th<\/strong> century and was not completed until 4 centuries later.<\/p>\n\n<p>The presence of the <strong>Mus\u00e9e Dioc\u00e9sain d&#8217;Art Sacr\u00e9 (Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art<\/strong>) in its south wing contributes to its reputation. But it&#8217;s also the <strong>splendid view<\/strong>, from the south tower, of the city&#8217;s rooftops and the ocean that attracts visitors. Fortunately, the weather changes quickly on the islands, and we were able to take advantage of the exceptional light to enjoy both the view from the roof and the play of light in the nave.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The ceiling of the 3 naves<\/strong> impressed us greatly. The tierceron ribs of its structure appear almost metallic, as the grey tones of the stone contrast with the naked whiteness of the walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The 360\u00b0 view from the south tower<\/strong> is splendid. On one side, the hills of the city and the staircase of buildings as far as the eye can see; on the other, the blue of the Atlantic Ocean and the ballet of boats entering and leaving the port.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Patio de los Naranjos<\/strong> (Orange Tree Courtyard) is a peaceful garden between the Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum. Its construction was ordered by <strong>Los Reyes Catolicos<\/strong>, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, after the conquest of Gran Canaria in 1478. Work began in 1500 and spread over <strong>4 centuries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The cathedral&#8217;s architecture reflects the <strong>economic fluctuations<\/strong> of the Canary Islands over the years. There are numerous bus stops nearby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On foot:<\/strong> the streets of Vegueta&#8217;s historic district are narrow and many are pedestrianized. This is due to the fact that the building was constructed over several centuries.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The neoclassical fa\u00e7ade<\/h3>\n\n<p>On the <strong>Plaza de Santa<\/strong> Ana, in the heart of the historic Vegueta district, the dark silhouette of Las Palmas Cathedral stands out. The architecture of the fa\u00e7ade is <strong>neoclassical<\/strong>. It was the 2 <strong>twin towers<\/strong>, representative of this style, that caught our eye. One houses the bell, while the other is the south tower, from which the roof of the building can be accessed.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-X953wTt\/0\/DS7CZcQ8qn5XpkVDvzzzxcrCGhQ6kBFfpcKr3FjGr\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_front_detail-L.jpg\" alt=\"Detail from the front of Santa Ana Cathedral in Las Palmas Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>On the other side of the square, we were intrigued by the 8 life-size bronze statues of <strong>Canarian dogs<\/strong>, which seem to stand guard. The story goes that these dogs lived on the island before the Spanish settled there. They are said to be the work of French sculptor <strong>Alfred Jacquemar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-28L2qvn\/0\/D4B8HWnknQhchwRXFw46H2H3R7ZD9GkrMPd48pf7B\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Plaza_santa_ana-L.jpg\" alt=\"Dogs of on plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 3-nave Gothic structure<\/h3>\n\n<p>The interior of Santa Ana Cathedral impressed us greatly, with its <strong>Gothic<\/strong> structure of 3 naves, separated from each other by slender, open <strong>palm<\/strong> <strong>columns<\/strong>. Little is known about the details of the original plans. The building is built in the shape of a Latin cross, and its transept is crowned by a cupola.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-t9HZD3t\/0\/FMHqHdSMhT73q6g4x9JTQktSNmZM9tnWjdt6MsRRk\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Nave-L.jpg\" alt=\"the 3 naves of Santa Ana Cathedral in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The <strong>blue stone<\/strong> from the <strong>San Lorenzo<\/strong> quarries used for the columns, arches and tierceron ribs of the vaults contrasts with the white plaster of the walls. We loved the effect of this light, porous volcanic stone, which here takes on a particularly spectacular metallic sheen.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-SbWvxCL\/0\/C7DJ59hC79XzjPbzrR33QHfvhWMpbztLjnRMxLvK4\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_ceiling_detail-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"detail of Santa Ana Cathedral ceiling in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We also loved the cathedral&#8217;s colorful <strong>stained-glass windows<\/strong>. The windows are small and set high up, like openings at the top of the walls, to highlight the distinctive ceiling.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-LLL4Gjr\/0\/C39W5Fx53LHsVZL5r9X9M4vZhx3k4JbPJtz9c97ng\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Ceiling_detail-L.jpg\" alt=\"stained glass windows in Santa Ana Cathedral, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remarkable works in the 11 chapels<\/h3>\n\n<p>The chapels of Santa Ana Cathedral are home to a number of remarkable works of art not to be missed. Among them are statues sculpted by one of the Canary Islands&#8217; greatest 18th-century sculptors, <strong>Jos\u00e9 Luj\u00e1n P\u00e9rez<\/strong>. His highly realistic polychrome wood sculptures depict religious figures.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-ZGSj6P7\/0\/CVwvXQWJ3RXP3QqgW3HVbD66KXrx7FSpgpZ3vFP8w\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Saint_Joseph-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint Joseph Chapel in Santa Ana Cathedral, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Statue of Saint Joseph carved by Luj\u00e1n Perez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>There are also some very fine old paintings, some by the famous 18th-century Baroque painter <strong>Juan de Miranda<\/strong>, also from the Canary Islands. During our visit, one of the Diocesan Museum&#8217;s latest acquisitions, an 18th-century representation of the<strong> Virgin<\/strong> Mary, was on display in the Chapelle Sainte-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-q87HJgc\/0\/CTKDDKWKjZTHHFCrXk6r7qVjBjNXsc3sqbvzLm4Zm\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Virgin_Mary-L.jpg\" alt=\"Virgin Mary paintin in Saint Theresa Chapel in Santa Ana Cathedral, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_breathtaking_view_from_the_top_of_the_South_Tower\"><\/span>The breathtaking view from the top of the South Tower<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>We then began our ascent of the cathedral&#8217;s south tower: 162 steps (or elevator) to the roof, and another 50 or so to the top.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The panorama from the cathedral roof<\/h3>\n\n<p>The roof of the cathedral offers a <strong>360\u00b0 panoramic view<\/strong> of the city of Las Palmas. It&#8217;s a privileged vantage point from which to contemplate the capital of the Canary Islands in its entirety and appreciate its rich <strong>architectural heritage<\/strong>. On the east side, you can enjoy clear skies and views of the<strong>Atlantic Ocean<\/strong> over the rooftops of the <strong>Triana<\/strong> and <strong>Vegueta<\/strong> districts.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-bsvq79d\/0\/FdVSWFMVxNm9RSnMjJrCTcfbbp4tPf2D327jPpgSH\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Roof-View_East-L.jpg\" alt=\"Eastern view from Santa Ana Cathedral rooftop in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>On the west side, we overlook the <strong>Plaza de Santa<\/strong> Ana and Las Palmas Town Hall below. We enjoyed watching the clouds gather over the colorful buildings, set in staircases on the slopes of the <strong>&#8220;riscos<\/strong> &#8221; <strong>San Juan<\/strong>, <strong>San Roque<\/strong> and <strong>San Nicolas<\/strong>. In our opinion, it&#8217;s well worth climbing up there to discover the city.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-2VxxBXR\/0\/CTFG4xSZLDqvfRdMVsW48f3b3VRZgcCw76z6L7xg7\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Roof-View_West-L.jpg\" alt=\"Western view from Santa Ana Cathedral rooftop in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climbing to the top of the tower<\/h3>\n\n<p>We climbed another fifty or so steps, the last ones, to finally reach the <strong>top of the<\/strong> cathedral&#8217;s south <strong>tower<\/strong>. The view isn&#8217;t much more spectacular than at roof level. We only felt as if we were standing on top of the North Tower steeple, with just the sky above our heads.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-sDkVQJb\/0\/KTmjrrG4ksDRZW59qz7VQSfm7LNGt2vx3dDQRGJM\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_Roof-View_Triana-L.jpg\" alt=\"View on Triana from the South Tower top of Santa Ana Cathedral rooftop in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>From up here, it&#8217;s easy to see the distinctive architectural features of <strong>Vegueta&#8217;s historic quarter<\/strong>, with its bell towers, flat roofs and colorful walls. A Renaissance-style door opening onto the <strong>Cour des Orangers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A stroll through the Patio de los Naranjos<\/h3>\n\n<p>We loved lingering in the <strong>Cour des Orangers<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a magnificent little interior garden, located in the south wing of the Santa Ana Cathedral. It is planted with orange and palm trees, and surrounded by<strong>arcades<\/strong> and <strong>galleries<\/strong>. We were able to see crosses of all kinds, in ivory, mother-of-pearl, silver or bronze, or in precious carved wood, as well as representations of Christ.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-p8rqPbP\/0\/CpbrNFTsksMkbPL8V4zsg679WNgNwKtCsJLCsS2xh\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_museum_exhibition_crosses-L.jpg\" alt=\"detail in the temporary exhibition at the las palmas museum of sacred art, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The permanent collection<\/h3>\n\n<p>We ended our visit by exploring the museum&#8217;s <strong>permanent collection<\/strong>, which continues on <strong>the second floor of<\/strong> the building (no elevator). We were able to admire paintings, sculptures and other liturgical pieces, created between the 16th century and the present day. Some of the pieces are truly beautiful. They bear witness to the talent and devotion of local artists.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-Rh3f3rG\/0\/DxDx3xgbSjr5j6vfNNmPqCrF69tzDHd9FLsBWt9X5\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_museum-L.jpg\" alt=\"outstanding works in the diocesan museum of sacred art at santa ana cathedral in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But it was the building&#8217;s <strong>Renaissance<\/strong> architecture that most delighted us. Carved woodwork, dark parquet floors, openwork passageways opening onto the patio&#8230; The place is enchanting. There are also <strong>polychrome mosaic<\/strong> floors, such as the one in the Salle Capitulaire. It dates from the 18th century and comes from the famous <strong>Manises<\/strong> factory, near Valence.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Canarias-Lovers\/Gran-Canaria\/Las-Palmas\/Santa-Ana-Cathedral\/i-XQhRTbD\/0\/CjDLGLSqH2Jjv3fwrrcLzT2hHjSccCrHMJFTG3rjF\/L\/Gran%20Canaria_Las%20Palmas%20_Cathedral_Santa_Ana_museum_azulejos-L.jpg\" alt=\"mosaics on the floor of the diocesan museum of sacred art at santa ana cathedral in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>And don&#8217;t miss the <strong>chapter house library<\/strong>. It houses <strong>4,000 books<\/strong>, including <strong>21 manuscripts<\/strong>.
